VANESSA HENRY

Educational Assistant - 2013

What brought you to Mohawk College?

I came to Mohawk College because I wanted an education. I received my high school diploma in 2009, after being out of school for 13+ years raising my children as a single parent. I started in the Academic Upgrading Program to upgrade my English, Computer, & Math Skills. I applied for the Educational Assistant Program because I always wanted to be in the classroom helping students learn.

Tell us about your favourite Mohawk experience?

My favourite experience at Mohawk College was the volunteering opportunities as a student. I volunteered for everything I possibly could, to be more involved at Mohawk to gain and learn new skills for myself. I volunteered for every Open House, golf tournaments, to etiquette dinners, and much more. I surprised myself in my 2nd year and received a Mohawk College Volunteer Award. Volunteering has always made me feel that I am a part of something and giving back in good way while having FUN!!!

What impact has Mohawk had on your life?

Mohawk College has had a huge impact on my life. I accomplished many great things as a student learner and I am very proud of myself for completing a two year program and receiving a College diploma. There were many challenges, barriers, & obstacles along the way and too many times I wanted to “throw in the towel”, but I was determined to get an education. I pushed through and learned more about me, who I am, and what I am capable of. The impact has shaped me into the dedicated and hard worker I am today.

What are you up to now?

For the past 10 years I have worked at the Hamilton Regional Indian Center (HRIC), in many different roles. I started working PT in the Alt. Ed. Program, Strengthening Hamilton’s Aboriginal Education, as the Educational Assistant (EA). I later, became FT staff, as the SHAE Coordinator of the Program. After a few years in the classroom I end up moving into the role of the Wasa Nabin Worker. l was continuing and working with Indigenous youth (Highschool) ages 13-18 in a more social worker role for 7 years. I am happy to say, as of October 2023, I am back in the role as the SHAE Program Coordinator, where I know I was meant to be.
