JUHAINAH HUSSEIN (She/Her)
Social Service Worker - 2023
What brought you to Mohawk College?
My name is Juhainah Hussein. My journey with Mohawk College started in the year 2019 as a LINC student in the Programs for Newcomers. I have completed several programs with the support of my wonderful instructors, mentors & academic coordinator Mary Anne Peters. I was able to enhance my English Language skills, learn about Canadian culture, and make valuable connections in the community through various volunteering opportunities in the Hamilton area. Furthermore, I developed useful skills for postsecondary studies and decided to pursue a career in the field of Social Service Work.
Tell us about your favourite Mohawk experience?
My favorite Mohawk experience was the experiential opportunities I was involved in as a full-time student in the SSW Program. I learned so much during my time at Mohawk both personally and professionally. Most importantly I developed transferable skills I use in the workplace today. These experiences gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, take initiative which was something I was not used to.
What impact has Mohawk had on your life?
Mohawk College changed the course of my life completely. Not it a million years did I think I will get the opportunity to complete my education with the life challenges I have come through as a refugee. With the support of family, friends and the faculty & staff of Programs for Newcomers and the Social Service Worker Program at Mohawk College who I cannot thank enough, I have become a better person through growth and compassion.
What are you up to now?
I currently work with Mohawk College as a Support Officer for Programs of Newcomers department providing operational and front-line clerical support to the newcomer training programs and activities including WPP, OSLT and Community Services WPP. I enjoy meeting and connecting with students from different parts of the world and supporting both learning and integration process. I believe that there is something to learn from everyone.
