CAROLINE HILL

Mental Health and Disability Management - 2022

What brought you to Mohawk College?

I attended Mohawk College’s Pathfinder Indigenous Youth Program for many years as a youth. I earned a few college elective credits through this program. The program helped me build confidence to attend post-secondary school. I was interested in taking a program in health care, I thought about PSW and occupational therapy. Then I found out about Recreation Therapy, graduated with honours and decided to take Mental Health and Disability Management after. I worked in the recreation field for two years, and in the summer would work as an Indigenous Youth Mentor for the Pathfinder program at Mohawk.

Tell us about your favourite Mohawk experience?

I love being able to hang out in Indigenous Student Services lounge. It’s so versatile to meet a variety of student needs. I like studying in this space, participating in cultural events and workshops and just hanging out with the staff and students.

What impact has Mohawk had on your life?

The pathfinder program, specifically gave me the confidence to navigate my college experience. Indigenous student services help me build a supportive community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. I would not be where I am without Mohawk and the Indigenous Student Services.

What are you up to now?

I loved Mohawk and the Indigenous Student Services so much, that I now work at the Indigenous Student Coach at Fennell Campus. I support Indigenous students at Mohawk College to ensure their success in their chosen program. I facilitate a variety of student success workshops including, APA, Study Tips/Exam Prep, and Resume and Cover Letter workshops. As well as connect students to other resources within the college and Hamilton community.
